CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the most studied natural active ingredients in relation to anxiety. Studies suggest anxiolytic effects in generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorders, and PTSD — without addiction potential. However, CBD is not a medication and does not treat any anxiety disorders.

Endocannabinoid System
CBD indirectly influences CB1 and CB2 receptors and may increase the level of anandamide (“happiness hormone”) produced by the body. Anandamide may reduce amygdala overactivity — the anxiety center in the brain.
Serotonergic System
CBD activates the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor — the same mechanism of action used by SSRI antidepressants (e.g., sertraline). This effect is considered in studies as the main mechanism of CBD's anxiolytic effect.
Cortisol Regulation
CBD may attenuate the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal), which causes increased cortisol release in chronic stress. Less cortisol = reduced stress reactivity.

Persistent and uncontrollable worries about everyday topics. Studies suggest CBD may act on the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor and reduce amygdala overactivity.
CBD Approach: A low daily dose (10–20 mg) could reduce background tension.

Post-traumatic stress disorder with flashbacks, sleep disturbances, and hypervigilance. Studies suggest CBD could improve REM sleep and reduce anxiety-related memories.
CBD Approach: As a complement to therapeutic follow-up; Shannon 2019 observed 91% improvement in sleep.
Golden rule: start low, go slow. Begin with the lowest dose and increase weekly until an effect is felt.
